Ben Youssef Madrasa, is one of the most beautiful historical sites in Marrakech. The school closed for renovation in November 2018 and finally opened its door again early this May.
Ben Youssef Madrasa is now open so let’s take a closer look at this wonderful location.
THE HISTORY OF ALI BEN YOUSSEF MADRASA
Founded in the 14th century by Morrocan monarch Abou el Hassan, Ben Youssef School is one of the most remarkable locations in Morocco. With its delicate stucco work and mosaics, the Madrasa is a a brilliant sample of the art of islamic architecture. The site is the largest Islamic college in Morocco and is also the most important. It has over 130 rooms which used to house over 900 students. Students lived and did their homework in Madrasa buildings and used the prayer hall to perform religious duties. The Ben Youssef Madrasa turned into a museum back in 1960 and remains one of the best locations to visit in Marrakech.
THE BUILDING OF BEN YOUSSEF MADRASA
As you walk in, you will reach the large patio with a water basin in its centre. The whole courtyard is decorated with beautiful mosaics, carvings and stucco. Here, three naves are bordered by arch-bearing marble pillars with ornamental motifs of pine cones and palms motifs, the walls decorated with Islamic calligraphy and impressive tile work. Look up and you’ll see a dome crafted from cedar wood with 24 small mosaic windows. While the main patio appears the most impressive, there are also other parts of Madrasa that are worth exploring. If you take the stairs, you can access numerous classrooms and chambers.
THE RE-OPENING OF BEN YOUSSEF MADRASA
In November 2018 Ben Youssef Madrasa closed for renovations. As Covid19 delayed the completion date, the site opened finally in May 2022 welcoming travellers from all around the world.
Ben Youssef Madrasa opening hours are 9:00-6:00.
The tickets are 20DHS/2 EUR per entry. You can purchase them while entering Madrasa’s gate.
HOW TO GET TO BEN YOUSSEF MADRASA
Ben Youssef Madrasa is located in the Northern Medina, near Ben Youssef Mosque and a 10-minute walk from Jemaa El-Fna. Although not many people are yet aware that the site is open, it gets very busy from early hours. If you want to avoid crowds, make sure you visit as early as possible. As a result, you will be able to explore the school without any interruptions.
