TONNARA DI SCOPELLO STAY REVIEW

You’ve seen it, that hotel. The one that lives on your Pinterest board under “someday” with the faded pink façade, the dramatic sea stacks, and the sun bleached stone buildings that feel more like a film set than real life. That’s Tonnara di Scopello. And for the longest time, it lived rent free in my head.

This summer I finally booked it. After years of saving photos, stalking their website, and telling myself “maybe next year,” I went and now I get the hype.

If you’re dreaming of a proper Sicilian staycation, something with soul, salt air, and a bit of faded grandeur, this might be the one. Welcome to my Tonnara di Scopello stay review – here’s everything you need to know before booking the most iconic hotel on the island.

WHERE IS SCOPELLO?

Scopello is this tiny coastal village tucked away on the northwest edge of Sicily, just above the Zingaro Nature Reserve. It’s about an hour from Palermo by car. Think dusty stone walls, terracotta rooftops, a sleepy little piazza, and gorgeous sea views. It’s quiet, local, and seriously photogenic.

The Tonnara itself sits just below the village, literally on the edge of the sea, framed by the wild limestone stacks you’ve probably seen all over Instagram.

How to get to Tonnara di Scopello

The easiest way in is flying into Palermo Airport—it’s just over an hour’s drive to Scopello. You can also fly into Catania, but be ready for a longer road trip (around 4 hours). Either way, you’ll 100% want a rental car. It’s the only way to properly explore this part of Sicily and not be stuck relying on taxis or buses.

Pro tip: I always use Discover Cars to book. It’s affordable, straightforward, and way less chaotic than trying to sort it at the airport.

From Palermo, you jump on the A29, head west, and exit near Castellammare del Golfo. Then it’s a winding, olive-tree-lined drive down to the coast and straight to the gates of the Tonnara.

How to book a stay at Tonnara di Scopello

You can book directly through the hotel’s website or HERE. Either way, don’t expect last-minute deals or flexible cancellation. This place books up months in advance—especially in summer, so if you want to get a nice room, book way in advance.

Prices vary depending on the season, but in peak summer you’re looking at around €1,000 to €1,200 per night. I paid €1,100 a night in July, with a three night minimum. You’ll pay 50% upfront when booking, and the rest a week before you arrive.

It’s definitely a splurge, but if you’re after something really special, this is it. Quiet, coastal, and unlike anywhere else in Sicily.

Tonnara di Scopello rooms & rates: Which room is the best?

There are 15 rooms scattered across three main buildings:

  • Palazzina Florio – the main pink building with 6 rooms and sea facing balconies
  • Le Vicarie – a former clerical residence turned into a stylish guesthouse
  • Le Taverne – rustic and tucked away rooms near the old boatyards

Every room is totally unique some are grand with soaring ceilings and sea views, others are tucked into quiet corners with stone archways and garden patios.

I stayed in the Igiea Room, and if you’re going to splurge, this is the one. It had three balconies, a spacious kitchen, a massive living room, and an equally big bedroom. The views were next level. Honestly, I didn’t want to leave the room, let alone the Tonnara.

Other favourites?

  • Lucie – Charming and bright, with killer views – if Igiea room is booked out and you want similar views, this is the one to pick.
  • La Baliera – Tucked above the main courtyard with a perfect sunrise view. This one is probably the most private, yet has insane views.

Some of the rooms are more hidden and don’t have sea views, so if you’re dreaming of that iconic Scopello seascape, make sure to ask for a room with a view when booking.

The public beach at Tonnara di Scopello

Good news: even if you’re not staying overnight, you can still visit the iconic Tonnara di Scopello beach. This is one of the most beautiful public beaches in Sicily with pristine blue water and dramatic cliff formations.

  • Entrance Fee: €25 per person
  • Opening Hours: 10:30 AM – 7:00 PM
  • Booking: Highly recommended to book in advance online, especially in summer
  • Where to book: Hotel’s official website – HERE

I saw loads of people turned away at the gate because it was full so don’t risk it. Arrive early to claim the best sun lounging spot. There’s also a small bar on site for snacks and drinks, and the beach is well looked after.

Just note: this ticket gets you access only to the public beach not the private hotel beach (the one with the cement platform), nor the hotel facilities.

Breakfast at the Tonnara di Sopello

Breakfast is served in a breezy open air spot right by the water, with views of the sea stacks and salty morning breeze. It’s not a massive buffet, but the spread is great. Think fresh pastries, fruit, eggs, cheese, local honey, strong Italian coffee. All the good stuff but nothing over the top.

Honestly, I didn’t even realise breakfast was included when I booked, so it felt like a bit of a bonus. The hotel doesn’t have a proper restaurant, so waking up to the smell of coffee and a quiet little table set up by the sea was kind of perfect.

Food & Dining Options at Tonnara Di Scopello

As mentioned, there’s no full restaurant on site just a small bar for drinks and snacks, also available for day visitors. But honestly, it all works. You can cook in your own kitchen (if your room has one, like mine), or take a short walk up to Scopello village for dinner. The village has several great restaurants serving pasta, seafood, and cold white wine perfect after a day in the sun.

Some spots to check out:

  • La Tavernetta – Great seafood and pasta with sea views
  • Made ’n Sicilia – Casual, tasty, local ingredients
  • Nettuno – Tuna tartare, busiate, always busy but worth it
  • Torre Bennistra – More upscale, with amazing coastline views
  • Panificio di Stabile e Anselmo – Iconic bakery for pastries and pizza bread

Also worth a stop:

  • Bar Pasticceria – Morning coffee and spritzes in the piazza
  • Gusto di Sicilia – Deli with antipasto, wine, and garden seating

It’s a small village, so if you’re visiting in peak season, book ahead—especially for dinner.

What to do in Scopello

Scopello’s small, but there’s plenty to fill your days without ever feeling rushed. Head up to the village for an aperitivo, pick up fresh pastries from the bakery, or just spend the afternoon swimming and reading by the sea.

If you’re up for exploring, the Zingaro Nature Reserve is withing 1 hour drive —hike along the coastal path and stop at hidden coves along the way. You can also drive 30 minutes to Grotta delle Colombe, a quiet cliffside spot with epic views and turquoise water, perfect for a swim and a photo stop.

Fancy a beach day? Head to San Vito Lo Capo, one of Sicily’s most famous beaches—but avoid weekends if you can, the traffic gets brutal. And if you’re staying at the Tonnara, definitely book the guided tour of the old tuna fishing museum on site—it’s quick but super worth it.

Events and Private Hire at Tonnara di Scopello

If you are planning something big, the Tonnara can be hired out exclusively for private events and weddings. It is honestly one of the most iconic venues in Sicily to host something special. So how much is it to host a wedding or event at the Tonnara Di Scopello? During the summer months, a full weekend hire (Friday to Sunday, minimum three nights) costs 85,000 Euro. Midweek options in peak season drop to about 55,000 Euro, and rates are lower in spring or autumn, starting from roughly 33,000 to 42,000 Euro depending on how many nights you take.

The price includes all 15 of the historic rooms on the property, breakfast, daily cleaning, and full access to the entire site. It sleeps around 55 guests. Catering, music, and event styling are extra, but the space is yours to play with. There is no music cut off, so parties can go late and you can literally dance by the sea under the stars.

Because of these events, the hotel is often fully booked out for weddings or private use, especially between May and October. So if you are planning to book as an individual guest, it is worth checking early and being flexible with your dates.

Is Tonnara di Scopello kids friendly?

You can absolutely bring kids to the Tonnara, but it really depends on the kind of trip you’re after. There are no kids clubs, pools, or playgrounds—it’s not that kind of place. But if your kids are happy with days by the sea, splashing in calm water, exploring old stone paths, and hanging out in a quiet, natural setting, then it works. A lot of the rooms are spacious and come with kitchens, which makes it easier for family routines. Just keep in mind that the property is historic and rustic, with uneven paths and stairs, so it’s not ideal for toddlers or prams. It’s a great option for laid-back families who like doing their own thing and don’t need full-on entertainment.

My honest thoughts on staying at Tonnara di Scopello

Tonnara di Scopello really is a special place—and yes, it’s expensive, but I honestly think it’s worth it. Considering you’re in Europe, in the middle of summer, and even average Airbnbs can cost nearly as much, the value here is actually reasonable. You’re getting a historic, iconic property right on the water with huge, character-filled rooms and a location that’s genuinely hard to beat. People love to say it’s too expensive, but for the quality, the setting, and how unique it is, I think the price is fair.

That said, this is not an immaculate, five-star-resort experience—and that’s kind of the point. It’s a very old building, full of charm and quirks. Even after the renovation, it still has those rough edges. You might catch a bit of damp or sea air in the hallways—especially on humid days—and yeah, you might get a faint smell of salt or mildew in some corners. It’s not a flaw, it’s just part of the reality of staying in a historic space right by the sea. Personally, I found it added to the atmosphere rather than taking away from it.

One thing I didn’t love, though, was the number of boats anchored just off the coast during the day. On sunny afternoons, there can be 70 or 80 boats floating just outside the Tonnara. Some of them come with loud music and people partying on deck. It’s not a huge issue, but it definitely takes away from that peaceful, hidden-away vibe you might be expecting. Just something to be aware of.

The wi-fi here is patchy, but this place is ideal for an internet detox!

The magic here is in the mornings and evenings. Once the public beach closes at 7 pm and before it opens again at 10:30 am, the whole place feels calm and almost cinematic. The sunrises are unreal—they hit just opposite the property and light up the cliffs and sea in the softest, warmest way. You don’t get sunsets here (the Sun drops behind the main building), but the mornings easily make up for it.

The private beach can get very busy during the day. If you’re after quiet moments, go early or wait until late afternoon. This beach is really tiny but it fills up fast, even if there are only 15 rooms at the property.

The staff were genuinely lovely—warm, helpful, and not in your face.
